Bryan Kohberger is claiming he had ineffective counsel who failed to disclose exculpatory evidence and told “elaborate lies” about death row before his guilty plea, in new court filings.
Kohberger—who recently announced his intention to withdraw his 2025 guilty plea—claimed his attorney failed to disclose evidence, including that Ethan Chapin was clutching hair from an unknown source, before he pled guilty in 2025 to killing four University of Idaho students, according to a petition for post-conviction release obtained by Oxygen.com.

He also alleged in the filing his counsel insisted “ that petitioner’s plea need not be truthful, despite petitioner’s vehement denial of actual guilt” and claimed that he and his family were told “elaborate lies” about life on death row.
As a result, Kohberger alleged in an accompanying affidavit that he was “convinced to falsely confess to capital murder, and felony burglary, by coercion, disinformation [and] false promises.”
He added that he was “advised to lie” about his role in the murders and accept the plea because the chance of him landing on death row was “imminent.”
