The Greater Los Angeles Area office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-LA) today raised serious concerns regarding the severity of criminal charges brought against Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Officer Daniel Flores, who allegedly secretly recorded racist, sexist, homophobic, and other discriminatory statements made by members of the law enforcement agency. The records of the conversations were subsequently provided to the LAPD as evidence of the misconduct.

According to a statement released last week by the LA County District Attorney (DA)’s office, Flores was charged with 16 felony counts of eavesdropping on or recording confidential communications and faces up to 13 years in prison. California is an all-party consent state, and the law generally prohibits the secret recording of confidential communications.
In a lawsuit filed by Flores against the department in June, he stated that he experienced intense stress after he was given a new supervisor in 2021, who allegedly made derogatory comments around the office. According to the complaint, Flores was reportedly “subjected to numerous statements he considered to be derogatory towards himself and others based on race, national origin, sex/gender, and sexual orientation.”
