California announced the 2023 minimum pay rate required for instructors at institutions of higher education to be exempt from state overtime and meal break requirements.
To be exempt from state requirements, instructors must earn a monthly salary equaling at least twice the state minimum wage for a 40-hour workweek, under state law. However, if the instructor is employed on a per-course basis, the instructor must receive at least the minimum payment per classroom hour, which is determined annually by the state.
