California Supreme Court disbars anti-LGBTQ+ lawyer who tried to help Trump overturn 2020 election - LGBTQ Nation

The California Supreme Court disbarred anti-LGBTQ+ lawyer John Eastman from practicing law in the state on Wednesday because of his efforts to help Donald Trump overturn the 2020 presidential elections. The state’s high court declined to review Eastman’s appeal of a lower court’s recommendation that he be stripped of his legal license. He has pledged to appeal the high court’s decision to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The state Supreme Court upheld a 2024 decision by the state bar association to disbar Eastman. In that decision, State Bar Judge Yvette Roland found Eastman culpable on 10 of 11 counts filed by the California State Bar for his “moral turpitude” and “false and misleading statements” about the 2020 election, The Hill reported.

Though Eastman appealed Roland’s decision to the California Supreme Court, the state’s top court ruled that her decision was “warranted by the clear and convincing evidence that he advanced false claims about the 2020 presidential election to mislead courts, public officials, and the American public,” according to George Cardona, the State Bar of California’s chief trial counsel.

Cardona said in a statement, “The Court’s order underscores that Mr. Eastman’s misconduct was incompatible with the standards of integrity required of every California attorney,” and added that the Supreme Court’s ruling affirms the fundamental principle that attorneys must “act with honesty and uphold the rule of law,” no matter who their client is.
