California’s new wage transparency law that took effect this month shows some top Google engineers make in the neighborhood of $500,000 more annually than some of the company’s lowest paid employees. But beyond offering a peek into some eye-popping salaries, the law’s impacts will be felt by employers, and workers, for years to come.
That’s because more clarity about what a job might pay could make negotiations easier for both sides, experts said. But, depending on how it plays out, the law also has the potential to drive wages down, in some situations.
