Campaigners call for EDI whistleblowers to be protected under new law - People Management

Proposal by Black Equity Organisation would shield employees who expose companies that fail to comply with new diversity legislation

Government ministers have been urged to pass legislation that safeguards whistleblowers who reveal employers that fail to adhere to upcoming equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) regulations.

The recommendations were made by the Black Equity Organisation (BEO) in anticipation of the forthcoming equality, race and disability bill, which is expected later this year and will introduce mandatory ethnicity and disability pay gap reporting.

If implemented, the bill would force organisations with more than 250 staff to reveal whether white and non-disabled staff are paid more than Black, minority ethnic and disabled employees.

As part of the consultation process for the bill, the BEO described whistleblower protections as “essential”, adding that there should be “a confidential channel for employees who report concerns to ensure they are not penalised”, according to a report by the Guardian.

Jummy Okoya, associate professor of leadership and inclusive practices at the University of East London, said protecting whistleblowers was crucial to creating “truly inclusive institutions”.
