Cardiologist and whistleblower joins race to be Chicago’s next mayor - Cardiovascular Business

Lisa Nee, MD, a former interventional cardiologist and public policy advisor, has launched a campaign to be the next mayor of Chicago.

Nee made headlines years ago when practicing at Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital outside of Chicago. Unhappy with the backlog of heart tests she encountered, she became a whistleblower with the ultimate goal of improving care for the region’s veteran community. She went on to become a healthcare executive.

“As a cardiologist, I've watched families struggle to afford the care that keeps them alive,” Nee says on her website. “As a mother, I think about the kind of city our kids are inheriting—and whether we're being honest about it. As an executive, I've seen how decisions get made behind closed doors, benefitting those already with power, not the greater good. And as a federal whistleblower, I've taken the risk of telling the truth when it wasn't convenient.”

Nee joins a crowded Mayoral race

Nine candidates have officially declared to be Chicago’s next mayor. It is unclear at this time if the current mayor, Brandon Johnson, will be seeking reelection.

Will the crowded field make it harder for Nee to reach voters? Or could the cardiologist’s lack of political experience be an advantage? Only time will tell.
