Just days after US President Donald Trump doubled duties on steel and aluminum imports to 50%, Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government tabled legislation — aimed at reducing interprovincial trade barriers, easing labour mobility, and advancing major projects.
Officials said in a statement that the legislation, which is expected to be known as Bill C-5, “seeks to get projects in the national interest built by focusing on a small number of executable projects and shifting the focus of federal reviews from ‘whether’ to build these projects to ‘how’ to best advance them.”
In addition to tabling this new legislation, the federal government is reportedly looking to remove further federal exceptions from the Canadian Free Trade Agreement by next month.
