Vadodara/Surat. A special CBI court has convicted four individuals in a 23-year-old fire insurance fraud case in Gujarat and sentenced each of them to three years of rigorous imprisonment. The court also imposed a fine of 50,000 on each convict in two 2003 cases involving forged documents and fraudulent insurance claim payouts.
According to case details, the Central Bureau of Investigation registered two separate FIRs on July 16, 2003, following allegations of fraud in fire insurance claims. The investigation found that forged and fabricated documents were allegedly used to support false claims and obtain wrongful payouts from insurance companies.
In the first case, the accused included surveyor Jatin Bhanubhai Joshi, a then senior official of The New India Assurance Company, and individuals linked to “Sonu Communications & Colour Xerox.” The alleged false fire damage claims during 2002 and 2003 caused a financial loss of 11,52,233 to the insurance company.
The second case involved allegations that forged documents were submitted in the name of M.D. Patel & Co. to obtain insurance compensation illegally. The insurance company suffered a loss of approximately 20,08,595 in this case.
After investigation, the CBI filed two separate charge sheets in 2004. The legal proceedings continued for more than two decades before the special court delivered its verdict.
