SRINAGAR: Police in central Kashmir’s Srinagar district on Monday dismissed as false and baseless claims circulating on social media alleging damage or desecration of copies of the Holy Quran in parts of the city.
In an advisory, police clarified that no such incident has taken place on the ground and said the information being shared online is unverified and misleading.
Authorities warned that the spread of such rumours and false narratives could create unnecessary panic, disturb public order, and harm communal harmony.
The police urged media outlets, social media users, and the public to exercise responsibility and avoid sharing or forwarding unverified content.
It further cautioned that strict legal action will be taken against individuals or groups found involved in spreading misinformation or fake news under relevant legal provisions.
Srinagar Police appealed for public cooperation in maintaining peace, order, and communal harmony in the district.
