Charleston County Sheriff's Office warns of scam targeting residents with fake claims - WCIV

LOWCOUNTRY, S.C. (WCIV) — Scammers are once again targeting Lowcountry residents by impersonating Charleston County Sheriff’s Office deputies and soliciting money by making false claims.

According to the sheriff's office, these scammers have been known to call their victims, posing as law enforcement officers, and trick the unknowing victims into believing they have missed jury duty or that they have a loved one in jail.

Then, the scammer will ask the victims for payment to relieve the situation.

In light of this circulating issue, the sheriff's office is reminding residents that they nor the Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center will ever call asking for payment over the phone or in person.

They advise residents to be skeptical of unprompted calls and be aware that scammers may use real employee names, spoof real law enforcement phone numbers, or create legitimate-looking email addresses.

Anyone who believes they may be being scammed by someone posing as the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office, is urged to file a report with the sheriff's office.
