'Chasing ghosts': Election officials debunk false voting claims made to Wisconsin lawmakers - Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

MADISON – Wisconsin election officials Wednesday debunked a slew of myths and false claims about the state’s voter rolls before a legislative committee but said they saw a need to address some narrow issues.

A pair of top officials from the Wisconsin Elections Commission testified before a legislative committee a week after Republican lawmakers seized on a presentation from a felon convicted of fraud who alleged widespread voter improprieties.

"I believe it is important to address questions and concerns in part to distinguish between genuine issues — worthy of our energy to address — and falsehoods that cause us to waste countless hours chasing ghosts," said Robert Kehoe, the commission's technology director. "If we fail to make this distinction, then Wisconsin will have lost an opportunity to address real concerns while focusing on imaginary anxieties."

From there, Kehoe proceeded to tear apart some of the examples made a week ago by Peter Bernegger, who helps lead a group of citizens that has spent the last year analyzing election data. Bernegger was convicted of mail fraud and bank fraud in 2009 and sentenced to 70 months in federal prison.

Both Bernegger and Kehoe gave their testimony to the Assembly Elections Committee.

Bernegger questioned whether a voter with the last name of Aadventure was a real person. Kehoe noted within minutes he was able to use public information to find that a man had legally changed his name to Aadventure and used that name to register to...
