Chattanooga mayor's office plans restructuring to comply with state DEI employment law - WTVC

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn — The Chattanooga mayor's office plans to restructure some of its departments in order to comply with new state DEI employment laws.

Parts of the Chattanooga Mayor Tim Kelly's administration are now out of compliance with Governor Lee's 'Dismantling DEI in Employment Act.'

That's according to the mayor's chief of staff, Kevin Roig, who spoke at city council Tuesday night.

Roig says he has a plan to eliminate some departments, and move others under a different umbrella.

The city says they will close the Department of Equity and Community Engagement and the Office of New Americans.

The Office of New Americans is geared towards the Latin community

Councilmember Ron Elliot says its disappointing the immigrant community is impacted the most by this.

"I hate to see us walk away from the work that was supporting them."

Roig says the Latin community will still have access to resources from the city.

Other departments will take over Community Engagement Programs and Activities, along with Neighborhood Services.

Council will review the changes next week.
