The first Board of Education Business meeting of the 2023-24 school year involved new faces, new honorees, new policies, and new raises for some of the district’s employees.

Following a executive session discussion on Sept. 21, the BOE voted to approve a new collective bargaining agreement for its administrators. The bargaining unit includes school principals, assistant principals, special education supervisors, pupil personnel director, curriculum coordinator, and athletic director, per District Chief Operating Officer Vincent Masciana. Board member Tim White thanked the administrators for “bargaining in good faith” and characterized the new deal as a “reasonable contract for everyone involved.”

The new deal includes yearly wage increases for the life of the four-year agreement — 3% effective on July 1, 2024, then 3% on July 1, 2025, 2.75% on July 1, 2026, and 2.5% from July 1, 2027 thru June 30, 2028, per Masciana. As announced recently by Governor Ned Lamont, Connecticut is increasing the state minimum wage to $15.69 an hour. That change becomes effective on Jan. 1, 2024, meaning some school employees will receive a raise at that time.

Masciana informed the Board that the change only affected approximately 40 employees, most of whom work 20 hours or less for the schools.

“That’s not going to have any kind of concern as to the salary budget. We will make those adjustments,” Masciana said. However, he added that the change did come as somewhat of a surprise, and would...
