As Chinese AI Models Gain Popularity in the West, Their Chatbots Fail to Debunk Pro-China False Claims More Than Half the Time

Chinese AI chatbots fail to debunk pro-China false claims more than half the time, raising concerns about the reliability of Chinese-developed AI models as they gain traction among users and businesses in the West, a NewsGuard report published this morning found.

NewsGuard tested seven Chinese AI chatbots with 10 demonstrably false claims promoted by Chinese state media or pro-China social media users. The chatbots failed to debunk the claims 53 percent of the time, more than twice the 24 percent failure rate among 10 leading Western AI chatbots tested against the same claims, NewsGuard reported.

NewsGuard found that the gap was driven in large part by the Chinese chatbots’ tendency to refuse to answer questions about Taiwan and other matters considered sensitive to Beijing, rather than directly challenge false claims. According to the NewsGuard audit, the Chinese chatbots declined to respond 24 percent of the time, compared to just 0.5 percent among their Western counterparts, reflecting the highly censored Chinese media ecosystem in which the bots operate.
