Chinese whistleblower detained by ICE imprisoned in Broome County Jail - Press & Sun-Bulletin

A Chinese whistleblower seeking asylum in the United States is currently being held in the Broome County Jail after being detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

On Dec. 15, members of the community gathered near the Broome County Jail to protest the detainment of Guan Heng, a Chinese man who immigrated to the U.S. in 2021 to seek asylum after allegedly documenting human rights violations carried out by the Chinese government.

At the rally, Justice and Unity for the Southern Tier President Andrew J. Pragacz said Heng was in court virtually for a hearing. The prosecution, Pragacz said, is attempting to submit a new motion to deport Heng to Uganda as a part of the U.S. government's new third-country immigration agreement.

Pragacz said Heng was arrested in August and has been in the custody of the Broome County Jail since.

"Like most of the people in the jail right now, he was seeking asylum, he is registered with the government, he has work authorization and they are still being picked up by ICE," Pragacz said.
