Chipotle Mexican Grill recently settled claims of potential child labor violations in Washington, D.C., including exceeding the legal caps on the number of hours minors are allowed to work.
The fast-food restaurant chain will pay the city $322,400 and adopt a new, comprehensive training and workplace compliance plan, according to Brian Schwalb, attorney general for Washington, D.C.
City officials identified more than 800 potential violations of local child labor laws over the past three years at Chipotle's 20 restaurants in the city. The city's laws prohibit employers from requiring minors to work past 10 p.m., work more than eight hours in a day, work more than six consecutive days in a workweek, or work more than 48 hours in a workweek.
"The law limits the hours they can work to ensure they are healthy, well-rested, and able to fulfill their responsibilities as students and to their families," Schwalb said.

Informing Minors of Their Rights
The company must personally review the city's child labor policy with all newly hired minors moving forward, the settlement says.
The attorney general's office began investigating Chipotle in 2022 after reviewing reports from other jurisdictions that had lodged similar complaints. It also investigated Chipotle for possible violations of the city's safe and sick leave laws but did not find any.
