Police have confirmed they are investigating former Democratic Party of Korea Seoul mayoral candidate Chong Won-o over his statement that he “did not engage in beach tourism in Cancún during a business trip to Mexico.”
On July 1, Seoul’s Seongdong Police Station announced that Jeong, the former candidate, has been charged and is under investigation for allegedly spreading false information under the Public Official Election Act. Jeong is accused of falsely claiming during the June 3 local elections that he “did not engage in beach tourism in Cancún during a 2023 business trip to Mexico.”
However, according to a report on the official overseas business trip submitted by A, a member of the Andong City Council who accompanied Jeong on the trip, Jeong visited Cancún Beach, the El Meho archaeological site, and the Maya Museum on March 8, 2023.
A source from the Seongdong Police Station stated, “An investigation is underway regarding the complaint filed in connection with this case.
