BANGOR, Mich. — A federal jury reached a verdict in a lawsuit against the City of Bangor which was first filed two years ago.
Former Police Chief Hothman Misane says he was repeatedly sexually harassed at work by the city manager, Tommy Simpson.
The jury has ruled the city must pay $1.2 million for violating federal and state employment law.
Misane joined the Bangor Police Department in 2017. He was promoted three times, eventually becoming chief in October of 2021.
In November 2021, Misane claims his supervisor, City Manager Tommy Simpson, made a sexual advance at him on an overnight trip. Simpson said he wanted to discuss problems within the city, according to Misane's attorney, Cait Malhiot.
“While they were at the hotel, Simpson tried to have sex with Misane, tried to get him to have a three-some," Malhiot said. “After that, he was sabotaged in his work, he wasn’t given the support he needed, he wasn’t allowed to attend city council meetings."
Misane was demoted to sergeant in March of 2021, less than two weeks later he was fired by former Mayor Darren Williams.
The jury ruled the city retaliated against him because he reported sexual harassment.
“After he tells the mayor I am going to form this sexual harassment complaint against Tommy Simpson, who happens to be the mayor’s best friend, they grew up together, two days after that, he gets fired," said Malhiot.
After Misane's claims, four other officers came forward, according to Malhiot.
