LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - The City of Laredo is addressing a false document that claims Mayor Dr. Victor D. Treviño allowed ICE agents to attend all Washington’s Birthday Celebration Association (WBCA) events to check proof of citizenship.
On Monday, February 3, city officials confirmed the claims were not true. Mayor Treviño stated that he has not approved or signed any request for ICE involvement at these events. The city is working with federal agencies to investigate where the document came from and to stop the spread of this misinformation.
“The City is currently investigating the source of the document. This document was not executed by my office,” said Mayor Treviño. “Federal immigration initiatives like these are the sole responsibility of the federal government within the confines of immigration law. Our communication and support for our law enforcement remains steadfast as we address changes in federal policy.”
The Mayor also warned residents about fake news meant to confuse or scare people. He urged the public to rely on official City of Laredo sources for the most accurate information.
