The Hayward City Council voted Monday night, Dec. 12, to raise the wage of non-represented workers, increase the on-call fee for public work workers, but tabled a motion to add on-call pay for the police leadership at the request of Hayward Chief of Police Joel Clapero.
The council approved a $.50 cent an hour pay increase for non-represented employees from Jan. 1-June 30, 2023 and another $.50 cent increase from July 1-Dec. 31.
The council also approved to increase the on-call fee for public work workers from $25 a day to $50.
Public Works Director John McCue said an employee is on-call for one week and agrees to be available for any emergency during 24 hours, requiring that person not consume any alcohol and be within 20 minutes of the city during those seven days.
McCue said most workers are called to water and sewer issues but occasionally they will be asked to salt roads over the winter.
When workers are called in off their normal hours, McCue said, they receive a minimum of two-hours of pay and at 1 normal wages.
McCue said he is salaried and when he is called in he receives two hours comp time.
The council approved the recommendation from the Personnel Committee to increase the on-call pay for Public Work employees from $25 a day to $50.
The Personnel Committee had also recommended giving the Police Chief and the Assistant Police Chief a $25 on-call when they also are on call.
