City of Rochester officials are responding to criticism that claims the city is undermining efforts of the Police Accountability Board to unionize.
The city says it hired a law firm when the PAB first announced plans to form a union six months ago. According to the city, that law firm is investigating several legal issues that need to be settled before the union can be created.
The city's Corporation Counsel released this statement:
PAB members say the independent firm, which according to the PAB costs $50,000, is actually preventing them from creating a union.
"Delays like this are a classic union-busting tactic meant to de-power workers, curtail their rights to safe humane working conditions and ultimately to impede the progress of the PAB — an institution that the people of Rochester have overwhelmingly voted for to support," said Stanley Martin, a member of Rochester City Council.
The PAB is also calling on Rochester City Council to have a special meeting next week to fill three vacancies on the board.
