A City whistleblower has been awarded more than half a million pounds after he was fired for exposing an alleged Chinese spy.
An employment tribunal has awarded Bharat Bhagani, a former compliance officer at Goldenway Global Investments, nearly 565,000 in compensation, according to a ruling published earlier this week.
Mr Bhagani took his former employer Goldenway, a UK subsidiary of a Hong Kong-registered company, to tribunal for unfair dismissal.
The executive claimed he was ordered to secure a work visa for an employee who later turned out to be a Chinese agent and was sacked after raising the alarm with authorities.
Goldenway Global claimed that Mr Bhagani was dismissed for gross misconduct and failing to obey the instructions of its directors.
However, a judge concluded last year that Mr Bhagani’s complaint was “well-founded” and ruled that he was unfairly dismissed because he shared his concerns with the Financial Conduct Authority.
Mr Bhagani went to the City watchdog to alert them to the alleged Chinese spy in 2022.
He also alerted the FCA of alleged money laundering, fraudulent loans and Goldenway Global’s attempts to appoint two Hong Kong-based residents as UK directors without regulatory approval.
