San Francisco Mayor London Breed announced last week that she will be “more aggressive with law enforcement,” a striking departure from the Bay Area’s more progressive recent stances on policing and criminal justice. The region is one many in the U.S. that are doubling down on their crime response.

San Francisco, like many other cities, has witnessed a rise in gun violence, while brazen retail thefts have put it in the national spotlight. One of the biggest reasons for Breed’s new policies, Sarah Holder reports, is to the opioid epidemic that has taken over the Tenderloin district.
