CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, Ohio — Cleveland Heights Police Chief Christopher Britton is publicly disputing claims made by Mayor Kahlil Seren regarding the police department’s handling of a recent investigation involving Seren’s wife, Natalie McDaniel.
In a four-page statement released Tuesday morning, Britton addressed a number of issues raised by the mayor during a July 31 press conference where the mayor criticized the Cleveland Heights Police Department, citing what he called a “troubling pattern” of behavior within the division of police.”
"Clearly, there is something deeply wrong with our community," said Seren during his July 31 press conference. "There is a problem, a cultural problem, both here in our division of police and also in our community."
Chief Britton, who said he was barred from attending the mayor’s press conference in person, said he watched the video later and felt compelled to respond. In his statement, Britton described the mayor’s comments as “false accusations."
"There are so many things wrong with what Mayor Seren had to say, that it is hard to know where to begin," said Britton. "But let me start by saying that I can understand -- and even respect -- the mayor for standing up for his wife.
