Commentary: Don't be fooled by the illusion of green pollution - Times Union

A tactic that dirty energy producers have used, very successfully, is spinning their product as the solution to a problem they are causing.

Fracked gas was a false solution. They called it a “bridge fuel” and said it would help in the transition to renewable energy. Politicians and the media parroted the “bridge fuel” theory, and for over a decade, pipelines and power plants have snaked their way across New York, bringing fracked gas from Pennsylvania, leaking methane and fracking toxins along the way.

You may not think that anyone would believe that to get to renewable energy, what we need is more fossil fuel, but with an army of lobbyists, public relations departments, and some in the media constantly repeating false claims, many people have come to believe it. Mark Eagan's Sept. 16 commentary, “CHIPS Act’s success depends on sound energy policy,” continues this tradition.

After a decade of gas expansion, the bridge fuel theory is no longer convincing, but we now have a plethora of new false solutions. Eagan espouses two of these: green hydrogen and renewable natural gas (RNG). However, as with other false solutions, this would only make the problem worse while wasting billions of dollars in taxpayer money.

Producing hydrogen gas is an energy-intensive and water-intensive process, which currently relies on fossil fuel; this is called “gray hydrogen.” But eventually, they say, we will have “green hydrogen,” which will be produced using renewable energy. But renewable...
