NEW HANOVER COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) - New Hanover County Commissioner Dane Scalise posted a video to social media, addressing what he calls “wild and false accusations” when it comes to claims of voter suppression and the New Hanover County Board of Elections.
The nearly seven-minute video was posted early Wednesday morning with the caption, “Calling out the dishonest people who made their best efforts to deceive and divide the public with totally false claims about the Board of Elections and ‘voter suppression.’”
It comes on the same day the Board of Elections is set to meet to discuss potential changes to its early voting plan for the 2025 Municipal Elections.
The current plan includes just one polling location for elections this fall, located at the Northeast Library off Military Cutoff Road in Wilmington. During the last municipal election in 2023, there were four early voting sites across the county.
There was some debate by the board on whether the one polling location would disproportionately affect voters who are elderly, individuals without access to reliable transportation, or parents caring for children during the day.
The early voting plan was eventually voted on unanimously by the newly sworn-in Board of Elections at its July 22 meeting.
Days after the vote, the plan led to outcry from elected officials and community members.
