Commissioner Stunkel Resigns - Monticello News

District 4 County Commissioner Gerald Stunkel has resigned from the Jasper County Board of Commissioners effective June 29.

As first reported on our website, Mr. Stunkel submitted a letter of resignation to Commission Chair Don Jernigan outlining his reasons for his impending resignation. Mr. Stunkel cites in the letter the desire to put his “freedom and personal safety first” moving forward, citing the personal threats that have been made against him due to what he calls “a radical group who wants to control the county.”

Much of what Mr. Stunkel had to say in the letter was around this alleged radical group. He states that this group is responsible for the fear and discomfort of political officials and Jasper County residents alike.
Mr. Stunkel also spoke openly about his policy on the controversial R-2 zoning discussions. He stated that all he wanted to do is provide more affordable housing for new and existing residents of the county and that this was “not a political agenda.”

However, he once again stated that the alleged radical group played a part in this not working properly either, with what he says is a show of hate and division.

Mr. Stunkel also states that his character was “assaulted” and reputation was “slandered” due to what he claims are false accusations against him. In the letter, he details these alleged false accusations.
