Commissioners Celebrate Big Brother Big Sisters Month - Hillsborough County
The Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners recognized September as Big Brothers Big Sisters Month in Hillsborough County during its Sept. 20 meeting. Chris Letsos, CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay, accepted the proclamation on behalf of the organization.
For nearly 120 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters and its numerous chapters have been instrumental in mentoring youth across the nation. The nonprofit organization offers unique programs in Hillsborough County that facilitate youth mentoring in the workplace, such as School-to-Work, law enforcement and first responder mentors, including Bigs in Blue/Badges, and mentee support post-high school, such as Big Futures. The county's local chapter, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay, has served more than 2,100 children in Hillsborough, Pinellas, Polk, Pasco, Citrus, Hernando, Sumter, Alachua, and Marion counties.
After accepting the proclamation, Letsos thanked the Board and acknowledged the significant support the organization gets from its adult volunteers, also known as "bigs."
"[Bigs] give of their time to make sure that our 'littles' can see a path forward, no matter their circumstance, no matter where they come from, no matter what holds them back, they have a 'big' there to lift them up, to guide them, and to support them," he said. "And we can't do that without our communities, without Hillsborough County's support, and without each and every stakeholder that makes this incredible work possible."
