MILWAUKEE, Wis. – A Milwaukee community organization wants the city’s sewerage district to audit its operator before considering a renewal of their contract this fall.
The group Common Ground says they received a letter from a whistleblower claiming Veolia, the France-based operator of the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District, “knowingly mismanaged [wastewater] treatment plants for nearly 20 years”, according to a April 27 news release.
A hearing is planned for April 30 at the War Memorial Center in Milwaukee, according to flyers distributed by Common Ground. The whistleblower plans to speak at the event, after which Common Ground leadership will sign a public letter calling on the MMSD board to hire a third-party to audit Veolia before making a decision on the operations contract.
A representative for Common Ground declined to elaborate on the allegations, referring to the planned April 30 event.
MMSD Executive Director Kevin Shafer confirmed to WTMJ they received a written copy of the audit proposal at their April 27 commission meeting.
