STAMFORD — The city was not promised inflated reimbursement costs for a pair of school construction projects, officials said Monday, reversing comments made last week by the state’s school construction administrator.
The erroneous statement came last Monday from Department of Administrative Services Deputy Commissioner Noel Petra, who was testifying to lawmakers about the agency's efforts to audit the procedures of the former head of the Office of School Construction Grants and Review, Kontsantinos Diamantis.
During that review, Petra said agency officials had uncovered commitments made by Diamantis to school officials in Hartford and Farmington, promising them millions of dollars in additional reimbursements for school construction projects that were not allowed under state law. As a result of that finding, officials notified both school districts in recent months that the state would no longer honor its previous commitments, The Connecticut Mirror previously reported.
When asked by lawmakers whether any additional schools had been promised inflated reimbursement rates, Petra replied that the issue was also identified in Stamford.
School district officials in Stamford, however, said last week they were unaware of any issue with the district’s reimbursement rate for two projects slated to begin this year: The $258 million construction of a new Westhill High School and the smaller, $52 million project to build a new early childhood center.
