A Bridgeport man was sentenced to five months in prison Wednesday for defrauding Amazon with fraudulent claims totaling over $200,000, federal officials said.
Rajhni Yankana, 28, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Alvin W. Thompson in Hartford to five months in federal prison followed by five months of home detention and three years of supervised release after pleading guilty to one count of wire fraud on Aug. 26, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office.
According to court records, Yankana created multiple vendor accounts with Amazon, which allowed him to sell merchandise on a third-party basis. He opened the accounts using false names, email addresses and other identifying information, court records said.
After setting up the accounts, Yankana told Amazon he was shipping valuable merchandise to be held for sale by the website. According to court records, he did not ship the merchandise and later claimed that it was lost using fabricated documents.
In turn, Amazon sent Yankana a number of refunds totaling $210,836.97 for the purportedly lost merchandise, court records said.
Yankana, who was released on a $50,000 bond, is set to report to prison on Oct. 27, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office. He was also ordered to pay the full $210,836.97 in restitution.
Two other men involved in the scheme have pleaded guilty to the same wire fraud charge, according to federal officials. Oshane Stewart, who defrauded Amazon of approximately $742,000, was sentenced to 18 months in...
