Patricia White, 70, of Old Greenwich, received a nine-month prison sentence for submitting false claims for unclaimed properties to around 30 state treasuries.
HARRISBURG, Pa. — Months after her brother was sentenced for his involvement in the same fraud scheme, 70-year-old Patricia White, of Old Greenwich, Conn., learned this past Monday in Harrisburg, Pa. federal court that she will go behind bars for nine months.
Alongside her brother – Henry White, Jr. – Patricia White must also pay back a total of $1,208,271 to approximately 30 state treasuries, according to a report from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania.
Court statements and documents show that Patricia White, along with Henry White, Jr., received more than $1.2 million in false and fraudulent claims for unclaimed property from state treasuries around the U.S.
Henry White, Jr. used the names of corporations with which he was not affiliated and had no lawful right to use to apply for and receive unclaimed property from these state treasuries.
Prosecutors say the scheme lasted about a decade after beginning in 2013.
Henry White, Jr. provided certifications to state treasuries under the penalty of perjury if they were incorrect.
Still, he used them to acquire payment checks, which were often sent by U.S. mail to the home he shared with his sister, Patricia White.
The White siblings then deposited and cashed the fraudulently acquired payment checks into a joint bank account.
