Coos Bay man charged in fake sleep study fraud scheme - KEZI

PORTLAND, Ore. - Two men face federal charges for allegedly defrauding Medicare, the Department of Health and Human Services, the Veterans Health Administration and private insurance companies out of more than $17 million.

The charges are part of the Department of Justice's 2026 National Health Care Fraud Takedown. According to U.S. Attorney Scott E. Bradford, the schemes inflated costs and siphoned taxpayer dollars from seniors, people with disabilities, low-income families and veterans.

Jahangeer Ali, 34, a citizen of Pakistan, was charged with health care fraud. Prosecutors say Ali owned Oregon Clinical Laboratory, a company that submitted fake claims for genetic testing to Medicare Advantage plans. The alleged fraud resulted in a loss of more than $15 million.

The beneficiaries and doctors listed on the claims had never heard of Oregon Clinical Laboratory, according to court documents. The genetic testing was never provided.

Mehrdad Gerami, 67, of Coos Bay was charged with conspiracy to commit health care fraud in connection with medical sleep study testing. Prosecutors say the scheme resulted in a loss of at least $2,124,363.41.

Gerami owned and operated Coastal Diagnostic Testing Group and Coastal Diagnostic, according to court documents.
