Former Met Police officer Dave Eden said ex-colleagues targeted female tourists around Soho nightclubs because they were likely to have left the country before questions were asked.

He said there was a macho culture of “toxic masculinity” within the Diplomatic Protection Group which evolved into the unit where rapist David Carrick worked.

Speaking to the , Dave added that officers watched porn on late shifts, and said: “You have to ask about the psychology of somebody that wants to swan around in body armour carrying MP5 submachine guns.

Dave added of the armed unit: “It’s about image, portraying the hard macho man, picking up women.’’

He said sexist and racist attitudes showed on police noticeboards in the early days and moved onto messaging apps.

Dave claimed the unit harboured some “predatory officers” for years, but nothing was done to root them out.

Carrick, 48, faces a life sentence after admitting 49 crimes including 24 rapes.

The Met is reviewing misconduct allegations made against 1,071 officers following Carrick’s conviction.

Greater Manchester Police has also revealed it had six misconduct cases involving police officers or employees found guilty of sexual offences, or those involving inappropriate relationships with victims of crime, in just three months from October to December, and a further 26 misconduct cases concerning corruption, drugs and violence.
