FLINT—Genesee County Commissioners have formed a special committee to investigate claims of employee mistreatment in the Genesee County Clerk’s office.
On Jan. 19, the county board established a bi-partisan subcommittee to review complaints allegedly made by some staff members in the clerk’s department against Genesee County Clerk-Register John Gleason. The committee will be comprised of County Board Chairman Domonique Clemons (D-Flint Township), Commissioner Shaun Shumaker (R-Fenton Township) and Commissioner Meredith Davis (R-Flushing Township).
Clemons said that he and his colleagues will be investigating allegations of “unfair and inappropriate” treatment within the clerk’s office, while also evaluating the authenticity of the claims.
“The subcommittee is going to look at all of our options to find the best path forward in a way that’s fair and balanced,” he said. “Until we begin the investigation, we don’t know who has done what or if there is any problem at all…we want to find out the truth for ourselves.”
Shumaker, who suggested the investigation, said that he has heard several complaints from employees about Gleason’s conduct in his department. While he did not disclose the nature of the complaints, Shumaker said that the matter should be examined closely.
