Prosecutor Park Sang-yong has partially won a defamation lawsuit he filed against former and current lawmakers over the so-called "Ulsan District Prosecutors' Office drinking party and feces allegations."
The Seoul Central District Court's 25th Civil Division (Chief Judge Kwon Ki-man) on Wednesday ruled partially in favor of Park in the damages suit he filed against nine people, including former lawmaker Choi Kang-wook and Kang Mi-jung, former spokesperson of the Rebuilding Korea Party.
The court ruled that Kang bears 20 million won ($14,700) in damages liability, of which 10 million won represents overlapping liability to be jointly paid by Choi, YouTuber Kang Sung-beom, and former spokesperson Kang.
However, claims against Democratic Party lawmakers Lee Sung-yoon and Suh Young-kyo were dismissed.
At a plenary meeting of the National Assembly's Legislation and Judiciary Committee in June 2024, Rep. Lee raised allegations that "about 30 prosecutors at the Ulsan District Prosecutors' Office held a drinking party using special activity funds in January 2019," claiming that a prosecutor suspected of involvement was the one who investigated the North Korea remittance case. In the process, he also raised allegations that the prosecutor in question drank at the executive dining room inside the Ulsan District Prosecutors' Office building after a dinner gathering and then smeared feces on a restroom sink.
