Woman’s husband demands judicial inquiry into gang rape incident

The plaintiff in a recent rape case in Cox's Bazar has claimed that he told his wife, the alleged rape survivor, to make a false statement in court after receiving an anonymous letter of threat.

The couple, along with their children, returned to Dhaka’s Jatrabari late on Sunday after spending four days in police custody in Cox’s Bazar after the incident.

Afterwards, the husband told the media that his wife was “coerced” into giving a "false" testimony in court.

He said some people handed him an unnamed letter on December 24, threatening them that they would not be able to return home if they did not lie in court.

Stating that he has no confidence in the police investigation, the man demanded a judicial inquiry into the incident.

The rape survivor and her husband have been complaining about the police's conduct from the beginning.

The contents of the woman's statement in court have not been made public. However, the Tourist Police claimed that Ashiqul Islam Ashiq, the key accused in the case, had been acquainted with the woman before the incident.

The woman had actually been staying at various hotels here for the past three months, police said on December 24.

Earlier in the day, police took the woman and her husband into custody for questioning.

Later, the woman was produced before a court where she gave a statement, according to Inspector Ruhul Amin of the Tourist Police.
