POLK COUNTY, Minn. — A Crookston man faces six federal charges for allegedly filing false tax returns and claims.
A recently unsealed indictment accused Philip Nelson Green of filing false individual tax returns with the IRS for the years 2019, 2020 and 2021. Each return reported at least one false item, such as wage information, tax withholdings and child/dependant care expenses, according to a press release from the Minnesota district of the United States Department of Justice.
The indictment also claims Green filed a false second amended 2021 income tax return, and a false 2022 income tax return, both of which sought more than $250,000 in tax refunds, the release said.
Green made his initial appearance in court Tuesday, March 24. He is charged with four counts of false returns and two counts of false claims. The maximum penalty for a false return is three years in prison; the maximum for a false claim is five years in prison.
An arraignment is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 1.
