HARTFORD, Conn. — A doctor sued for providing "unnecessary controlled substances" to his patients has agreed to pay an over $455,000 settlement to resolve those allegations.
Naimetulla Ahmed Syed, M.D., agreed to pay $455,439.26 to settle allegations of violating the federal and state False Claims Act and the Controlled Substances Act in connection to providing unnecessary prescriptions, including controlled substances. The U.S. Attorney District of Connecticut and Attorney General William Tong announced the settlement Thursday.
Syed was accused of prescribing unnecessary prescriptions to patients and then submitting false claims to Medicare and Medicaid, as well as billing Medicare and Medicaid for unnecessary office visits related to the prescriptions. These false claims would be submitted by Cornerstone Pharmacy, Inc., which does business as the now-defunct Whalley Drug in New Haven.
