Despite rumors circulating lately, and statements by U.S. President Donald Trump about a supposed absence of autism in Cuba due to economic difficulties, Cuban doctors and experts assure that these words do not reflect reality.
For many years, the country has run a state medical system with clinics that treat autism, and awareness campaigns about this disorder are conducted. Cuba also provides specialized therapies for foreign patients who are willing to pay for services in various currencies, including training using dolphins as a form of rehabilitation.
However, despite public data about the country’s approaches to autism, Trump on Monday made a strange and false claim that the island’s economic collapse deprived Cubans of autism.
“I mean, there’s a rumor, and I don’t know if it’s true or not, that in Cuba there is no Tylenol because they don’t have money for Tylenol. And they have almost no autism, okay. Tell me about it,”

Cuban officials have not yet responded to these statements, and the island’s public press has not covered such claims.
Yet for years Cuban doctors have spoken openly about efforts to diagnose and treat children and adults with autism on the island.
