The original report was hardly cautious. It did not present the alleged meeting as a possibility or an unverified claim. The headline declared that Harry and Meghan “had secret lunch” at the Horners’ Cotswolds home and went even further by asserting that the former Spice Girl and her husband were advising the couple on their supposed return to Britain. The accompanying splash screamed “SUSSEX SPICE!”, turning an anonymous-source claim into a fully packaged narrative before readers had even reached the article.
There was just one rather important problem: Harry and Meghan said the lunch never happened. Their spokesperson rejected the story as “completely untrue,” while confirming only that the couple are fans of the Horners. In other words, the central event on which the entire story rested was denied outright.
This was not a disagreement over interpretation. The Sussexes denied that the meeting happened at all. By then, however, the headline had already circulated across social media and other outlets.
