'Deeply Disturbing': Jefferson County Jail Warden Says Mistreatment Claims By Clarion Inmates are False - exploreJefferson

CLARION COUNTY, Pa. (EYT) – As of Thursday night, all Clarion County inmates who were temporarily transferred to the Jefferson County Jail amid staffing shortages have been returned to Clarion, according to Clarion County Commissioner Braxton White.

Jefferson County Jail Deputy Warden Brandon Schott verified to exploreClarion.com that Clarion County inmates have been moved back to Clarion County.

Clarion County Jail Counselor Kayla Popoleo offered insight into the temporary housing, sharing inmate concerns about conditions at the Jefferson County Jail. She expressed her concerns during a public October 3 meeting of the Clarion County Prison Board of Inspectors.

“We had a couple of inmates come back,” Popoleo said. “They are crying, they are not eating, they’re not getting the proper medication, they’re not getting mental health services because they say that they can’t see them. They can only see Jefferson in Clearfield.”

“I think that is a problem. I see them weekly, and I know that they don’t have time to be seen weekly in Jefferson County. I also received a couple of notes from inmates, which I gave to Warden Sherry Yates, stating how badly they’re being treated. They signed the form, knowing that they were being treated poorly and not receiving adequate communication.”

The prison board has had at least one closed door executive session since the October 3 meeting, but no actions have been officially announced, except for the return of inmates on Thursday night.
