Democrats Try to Put Florida on the Senate Map with Trump Whistleblower - Cook Political Report

Democrats hope to expand their narrow path to flipping the Senate after retired Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman announced that he will challenge Florida GOP Sen. Ashley Moody.

But the party’s recent history in the Sunshine State has been decidedly overcast. Once a quintessential swing state, it has moved into decidedly red territory in the Trump era, voting for the president by 13 points last year. Vindman will likely be able to raise substantial cash for his uphill bid against Moody, who was just appointed to the seat last year. But we don’t yet see this race cracking the list of potential pickups, and it remains in the Solid Republican column for now.

Vindman rose to political fame as a national security staffer who became the central whistleblower in President Donald Trump’s first impeachment trial, testifying that the president pushed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to investigate then-former Vice President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter, ahead of the 2020 presidential election.
