Deputies: 6th grader charged with making false statements about gun at Clermont County school - WLWT

BATAVIA, Ohio —

A Clermont County middle schooler has been charged after making false statements about a firearm being brought onto school property, according to the Clermont County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies say around 8:30 a.m. Thursday, West Clermont Middle School administrators notified the School Resource Officer, a Clermont County deputy, of reports that a 6th-grade student told her class that she saw a student with a gun in the school building hallway.

Officials say the claims were quickly reported to the SRO and school administrators, with an investigation following. Additional deputies responded to the school as a security measure, according to the department.

Officials say through interviews with students and staff, an 11-year-old student was identified as being the one who made the statement. The student cooperated with law enforcement.

According to deputies, during an interview, the student stated that she lied and imagined seeing the gun, saying she never saw anyone with a weapon.

Authorities say camera footage was reviewed, which confirmed there was no one with a weapon in the hallway as initially reported. It was later confirmed that no firearm was brought onto school property and no students were in danger.

Deputies say the student has been charged with one count each of falsification and making false alarms, both first-degree misdemeanors.
