The Department of Homeland Security has said it will extend protections for Somalis facing civil war in their home country through September 2024.
In DHS’s announcement Thursday it said it will also re-designate Somalia for Temporary Protected Status, which offers foreign nationals removal protections and employment authorization in the US for up to 18 months when armed conflict or natural disaster make it unsafe to return to their country of origin.
Somalis residing in the US as of Jan. 11 will be eligible to apply for TPS protections through Sept. 17, 2024.
