Disinformation page invents gun laws feud between Musk and PM - aap.com.au

AAP FactCheck - Elon Musk and Anthony Albanese are not trading public insults over gun laws, contrary to a widely shared social media post from a disinformation operation.

The quotes attributed to the men about a supposed spat are fake, and there are no credible news reports of the alleged feud.

A Facebook page called "AUS Daily News" claims that the billionaire attacked the prime minister over gun law reforms.

The post also suggests Mr Musk questioned whether the prime minister had "bought" votes.

"I am just a politician who is also the world's number 1 billionaire but I cannot understand the mindset of a country's leader like him," Mr Musk is quoted as saying.

The post goes on to claim that Mr Albanese responded with his own criticisms of the billionaire.

It quotes Mr Albanese as replying: "[Elon Musk] is just a billionaire with nothing but money, not even a head to think with."

The author of the post directs users in the comments section to a supposed news article laden with further false claims and ads.

Many users appear to believe the claims in what is just the latest example of political disinformation spreading rapidly across social media platforms.

The quotes attributed to both Mr Musk and Mr Albanese are fabricated.

There's no record of these remarks in any credible news media reports, only in disinformation posts on Facebook.
