The District of Columbia is delaying the first minimum wage increase for tipped employees in 2023 to May 1, under emergency legislation (D.C. Act 25-3) Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) signed Jan. 26.
The hourly minimum wage for tipped employees was originally scheduled to rise to $6 effective Jan. 1, under a ballot initiative (Ballot Initiative 82) that voters passed on Nov. 8, 2022. However, the ballot initiative is currently under congressional review and is expected to be approved and become law on March 8.
