JUNEAU, Wis. (WMTV) - Four months after filing a federal defamation lawsuit over claims an Illinois woman was secretly detained at the Dodge County Jail, Dodge County Sheriff Dale Schmidt has expanded the case, adding another defendant and alleging a civil conspiracy.
The amended complaint, filed Monday in U.S. District Court, adds Sarah Afzal, the sister of Sundas ‘Sunny’ Naqvi, as a defendant and accuses Afzal, Naqvi and Cook County Commissioner Kevin Morrison of conspiring to spread false claims that Naqvi was secretly detained by immigration authorities and held at the Dodge County Jail.
Schmidt said investigators have gathered additional evidence since filing the original lawsuit.
“Back in April, we filed an initial complaint regarding the false statements that were made,” Schmidt said. “But since that time we’ve been able to obtain additional evidence.”
According to Schmidt, that includes surveillance video, hotel records and phone records that he says strengthen the allegations in the amended complaint. Those allegations have not been proven in court.
“We’ve now been able to really establish that a conspiracy was at work,” Schmidt said. “And that’s a big part of this complaint — this is now a conspiracy lawsuit.”
The amended complaint alleges Naqvi remained in contact with both Morrison and Afzal during the period she publicly claimed she was being detained.
