Judgements and settlements under the False Claims Act topped $6.8 billion in the last fiscal year, according to new data from the Department of Justice.
DOJ said in an announcement last week that the $6.8 billion tally is the highest ever under the False Claims Act. In the fiscal year ending Sept. 30, 2025, whistleblowers submitted 1,297 qui tam lawsuits, also the highest number in one year, according to the announcement.
The department added that the government opened 401 investigations in the past fiscal year.
The agency said that, since the False Claims Act was significantly enhanced in the mid-1980s, there have been $85 billion in total settlements and judgments.
“Stopping rampant fraud is a top priority, and this record-breaking year proves the False Claims Act remains one of the government’s most powerful weapons against fraud,” said Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche in the announcement. “We will continue to aggressively deploy it to protect taxpayer dollars and hold all fraudsters accountable.”
Of the $6.8 billion total, $5.7 billion was related to the healthcare industry, DOJ said. This includes fraud across Medicare, Medicaid and TRICARE. That $5.7 billion reflects federal recoveries only, though investigations in healthcare are also critical to recoveries for state Medicaid programs.
Per the announcement, DOJ focuses its False Claims Act investigations in three buckets: managed care, prescription drugs and medically unnecessary care.
